Lab Grow Diamonds

What are lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that are grown in a laboratory rather than being mined from the earth. They have the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds, but they are created using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process.

What is the difference between lab grown and natural diamond?

The primary difference between lab and natural diamonds is their method of formation and the way in which they are sourced. Natural diamonds form many miles under the surface of the earth and are extracted using mining. Lab diamonds are made in laboratories under manmade conditions which mimic the chemical and physical processes that occur in the earth’s mantle. A professional jeweler or diamond expert would not be able to decipher the origin of a diamond unless they were to use advanced instruments. Meaning, a lab diamond will shine and shimmer the same way a natural diamond would.

Thanks to how they are formed, lab diamonds are a more sustainable alternative to natural diamonds. You get the same stone while saving the planet from harm. Also, because diamond laboratories can meet demand, the price of lab diamonds is typically lower than the prices of natural diamonds. You can read more about lab diamonds.

Are your diamonds certified?

Yes! All of our lab diamonds are certified by either GIA or IGI. These are internationally recognized organizations which evaluate and grade lab diamonds, natural diamonds, and many other gemstones. Depending on the organization that certifies your diamond, you will receive a physical copy of the certificate along with the jewelry you’ve purchased.

Where do lab grown diamonds come from?

Lab grown diamonds are created in a lab, but that does NOT mean they are not real diamonds. Scientists start with a diamond seed - a small sliver of chemicals - then expose it to temperatures and pressures to make it grow like a diamond under the ground. A carbon coating helps the diamond crystalize as it grows.

This advanced technology simulates natural growth, allowing the seeds to mature from a sliver to a fully-formed diamond.

Are lab grown diamonds the same as natural diamonds? if not, how are they different?

Lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds offer identical optical and chemical composition. The sparkle is the same - the core difference between them is their origin.

Are lab grown diamonds or natural diamonds of higher quality?

Neither is inherently higher quality; both lab grown and natural diamonds are available in a range of qualities. For example, while the color of one diamond may be superior, the other diamond may be superior in clarity - this isn’t connected to the diamond’s origin.

Will i still receive an appraisal and/or a laboratory certificate?

Yes. Florence Johnson lab grown diamonds are graded to the same standards as our natural diamonds. That means your lab grown diamond will be accompanied by an independent laboratory report detailing its "4 Cs" - cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. If your diamond is mounted into jewelry, it will also be accompanied by an insurance appraisal.

Okay, so the untrained eye cannot tell the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds. what about the trained eye?

Same deal, because lab grown diamonds are virtually and chemically identical to natural diamonds, they cannot be distinguished even with a professional loupe.
